Peppermint Pigs
Peppermint Pigs are a Saratoga Springs tradition that have gone international in their popularity. A pig, in Victorian holiday tradition, is a symbol of good health, happiness and prosperity. These special "Peppermint Pigs",™ are unique to Saratoga Springs, New York, and are a time honored tradition dating back to the 1880's evoking an old-fashioned Yuletide - a wonderful time when red-cheeked children laughed and rode old wooden sleds over fresh snow, when church bells pealed and fond gathering and recollections were shared by family and friends. After a holiday dinner, the "Peppermint Pig",™ was passed around the table, and each guest would in turn give the pouch a firm tap and share a tale of the past year's good fortune. After each had taken a turn, the delicious broken peppermint pieces and warm memories were were shared by all with wishes for prosperity for the coming year.
